About Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori)
H. Pylori is a small, spiral shaped bacterium that lives on the surface of the stomach and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) and can be associated with a variety of gastrointestinal diseases, including duodenal and gastric ulcers, non-ulcer dyspepsia, active and chronic gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), and some stomach cancers.
Symptoms
Most people won’t realise they are infected with H. Pylori. However, in the instances when signs or symptoms do occur, the following are common: an ache or burning pain in the stomach, nausea, loss of appetite, frequent burping, bloating or unintentional weight loss.
Frequently asked questions
Why test for H. Pylori?
H. pylori usually passes from person to person through direct contact with saliva, vomit or stool. It may also be spread through contaminated food or water. If left untreated the H. Pylori-associated conditions may worsen and start to cause health problems. Screen for peace of mind and as part of a health regular routine.
When should I test?
The test can be used at any time of the day and performed following repeated stomach and intestinal troubles.
How do I collect the stool sample?
The test kit comes with a stool catcher that sticks to the toilet seat. After going to the toilet the stool sits in the catcher ready for you to take a sample without getting your hands dirty.
Interpreting results
When both the test (T) line and control (C) line appear, it means there is H. Pylori antigen is present in the sample. A control (C) line on its own means no H. Pylori antigen is present in that particular sample. Always read the instructions before use. Consult a doctor if you get a positive result or you have concerns about your stomach or intestines. Seek immediate medical advice if you have severe or ongoing stomach (abdominal) pain strong enough to wake you at night or bloody or black poo or vomit.
